A Journey Through Kampong Glam’s Heritage

Exploring heritage with our little adventurers in Kampong Glam! Guided by a licensed member from the Singapore Tourism Promotion Board (STPB) and the National Heritage Board, our preschool children embarked on an enriching journey through historical sites. They visited the majestic Sultan Mosque, explored the Royal Graveyard, and wandered around the old Istana Kampong Glam. Their adventure was enhanced by exploring archaeological finds linked to Sang Nila Utama and the ancient Malay kings. The day was filled with immersive learning about Malay traditions such as “Wayang Kulit” (shadow puppetry), “Batik” (fabric dyeing), and “Jamu” (herbal medicine), along with a demonstration of the Malay martial art “Silat”. The children also had the delightful experience of tasting traditional Malay kueh, adding a flavourful end to their cultural exploration.

Heritage tours like the one to Kampong Glam play a crucial role in preschool education by opening doors to vibrant cultures and historical insights that textbooks alone cannot provide. These experiences allow children to connect with their national identity and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures that shape their community. By engaging with historical artefacts and participating in traditional arts, children develop a deep-seated respect and curiosity for different heritages. Such tours are instrumental in fostering a sense of belonging and pride in their cultural roots from an early age.

Furthermore, incorporating heritage tours into preschool curriculum supports holistic development in young learners. These tours encourage observational skills, critical thinking, and empathy towards different cultural practices. Children learn to observe, question, and reflect on their surroundings, which are essential skills in their formative years. Moreover, the sensory experiences of seeing, touching, and tasting during these tours enhance cognitive development and memory retention. Engaging with the community and its history in such an interactive manner lays a solid foundation for lifelong learning and cultural appreciation, making heritage tours an invaluable part of early childhood education.

Mobile devices have revolutionised how we learn, connect, and entertain ourselves. Yet, as technology seeps into every corner of our lives, it has also opened the door to growing challenges—particularly for children. Excessive screen time and mobile device addiction can stifle healthy development, interfering with sleep, social skills, and emotional well-being.    The Impact of Mobile Device Addiction on Children   Prolonged exposure to mobile screens can disrupt young minds in multiple ways. Sleep schedules often deteriorate due to late-night gaming or scrolling, while face-to-face social interactions decline as virtual worlds supplant real-life connections. Over time, these patterns can undermine a child’s emotional and cognitive growth, leading to difficulties in concentration, problem-solving, and empathy.   In addition, the psychological toll of social comparison online may contribute to anxiety, low self-esteem, and even depression. By understanding...
